What is an elf door and how is it used?

• The elf door is a small decorative door—often in miniature format—that is placed at the baseboard, on a wall, or in a play area of the house. It serves as a symbolic entrance for the elf who “moves in” during the month of December, which is often combined with little letters, pranks, or tasks. 

When does the elf move in and out?

• Usually, the elf “moves in” on the night of December 1 and plays little pranks or leaves letters until Christmas Eve. After Christmas, the area around the door is cleaned up, and the elf moves “home” again. 

Where should you place the elf door?

• The most common places are at the baseboard, along a trim, on the inside of a closet door, or next to a flower table—in short, anywhere it looks plausible that the elf could squeeze through. Feel free to use adhesive putty or small double-sided adhesive pads to attach the door, but do so gently so as not to damage the wall surface.

• To make the elf door extra lively, you can paint it in a color that matches your home’s decor or go for a classic Christmas theme (red, green, white). A small LED string light or mini string light behind the door creates a cozy ambient lighting effect.
